Symbolism
The colors, galleon, Maltese cross and wave line are taken from the design elements of the shoulder sleeve insignia authorized the former United States Army Forces Southern Command. The white background represents exploration of the New World. The Maltese cross was the insignia of Columbus, the first explorer to land in the Caribbean Area.

The shoulder sleeve insignia was approved on 30 Dec 1982. (TIOH Dwg. No. A-1-679)
